Opening I recently embarked on a project to integrate Home Assistant more deeply with my Android Auto setup. I wanted a more seamless and convenient way to control my smart home while driving, beyond the limited built-in Google Assistant integration.   • Reliance on a stable internet connection. If your phone loses connection, control is lost.
  • Another method I explored was using a custom Android Auto app (requiring coding and developer mode activation). Advantages:
  • Potential for a tailored and intuitive interface designed specifically for in-car use.
  • More control over the user experience.
  • Disadvantages:
  • Significant development effort required, needing Android development skills.
  • Maintenance overhead to keep the app compatible with Android Auto updates.
  • Security considerations when developing and deploying a custom app.
  • Finally, I also looked into using IFTTT or similar web services to trigger Home Assistant actions. Advantages:
  • Relatively easy to set up, leveraging existing applets and integrations.
  • Disadvantages:
  • Dependence on cloud services, introducing potential latency and reliability issues.
  • Limited customization options compared to direct API integration or a custom app.
  • Privacy considerations when relying on third-party services.
  • Conclusion After experimenting with several methods, I found a Tasker and REST API approach to be the most flexible but difficult to configure. I did not proceed with creating a custom app due to the level of effort required. I currently use IFTTT for some very basic automations due to the simplicity of setting it up, but realize that it's a compromise when it comes to response time. Depending on your technical skills and security needs, the best approach may vary. Always prioritize security when exposing your Home Assistant instance to the internet or external applications. I ultimately chose the Tasker route because of its customizability to my specific needs, but had to implement rigorous safeguards and security measures in order to maintain integrity.
